What is orthodontics?

Dentistry refers to the many aspects of keeping your teeth healthy, and orthodontics deals specifically with getting them into proper alignment. An orthodontist is a dentist who has also received additional education and training in identifying and correcting bite abnormalities. Orthodontics alone have the skill and expertise to successfully straighten teeth, correct misaligned jaws, and improve your mouth’s overall function no matter how complicated the problem.

Generally speaking, orthodontists focus on the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of dental and facial abnormalities. When these kinds of issues are left untreated, they continue to worsen and cause wear and damage to your teeth, gum tissue and bone can cause face and neck problems, headaches, and trouble chewing and speaking is the problem is severe. Experienced orthodontists like Dr. Baugher and Dr. Claiborne can diagnose and treat these issues, improving both the function and appearance of your smile!

Why more adults are choosing orthodontic treatment

Most of us understand our health better as we get older, including a better understanding of how oral health linked to our total body health. This knowledge may motivate you to seek dental or orthodontic treatment to keep your teeth and gums healthy or care for existing issues.

We see many adult patients who had incomplete orthodontic treatment when they were young and are now interested in finishing their smiles. Touch-up treatment is common, as well. Teeth that were straightened in a patient’s younger years can shift over time due to age, genetics, or improper retainer use. In these cases, we can monitor the teeth, provide new retainers, or retreat with braces or aligners.

We also see a lot of adults we are pursuing treatment for the first time because they want to improve the look of their smile. The resulting boost in confidence and self-esteem can positively impact many areas of a person’s life, both professionally and personally.

Orthodontic options for adult patients

No matter why you’re seeking orthodontic treatment as an adult, you have more options than ever before! Our expert team is proud to offer the following treatments for a total smile makeover.

Traditional metal braces

Traditional braces are a recognized symbol orthodontics because they’re one of the most efficient options available. This is especially true for more severe or complicated cases that might not be eligible for other treatments. Modern braces use high-quality stainless steel, but innovations in the design mean they’re much more comfortable than previous versions. The total treatment time also tends to be shorter than it used to be.

Ceramic braces

Clear braces, made out of clear or tooth-colored ceramic, work the same way metal braces do. They can be used with elastics or ties that are also clear, white, or tooth-colored. Ceramic braces can be an excellent choice for image-conscious patients. Still, because they are more delicate than metal braces, we generally only recommend them for older teens and adults.

Invisalign clear aligner therapy

The Invisalign clear aligner system used clear, customized, removable aligners instead of metal brackets and wires. These are custom-designed to fit snugly over your teeth, and gently move them into the desired positions over time. Aligners are made of a soft but durable thermoplastic resin. They are replaced with the next in the series every 1-2 weeks to keep up with the shifting teeth.

All three of these options can be a great fit for busy adults! You can trust that Dr. Baugher and Dr. Claiborne will only recommend the treatment she feels will work best with your smile, lifestyle, and goals.
